The film Udta Punjab is slated for release on June 17, 2016. It's based on the drug addiction problem in the state of Punjab. A group of young Punjabi men start to sell drugs after their hometown suffers a drastic reduction in opium production due to international pressure on India and Afghanistan, the countries responsible for opium exportation. The money they earn from trafficking drugs becomes more tempting than ever with their families' future looking grim. Eventually they are caught by the police and tried in court but are let off after they bribe officials with large sums of cash. Banerjee's film intends to not only capture the problem of drug addiction but also the socio-economic problems faced by the people in Punjab. Udta Punjab deals with a subject that is close to the heart of several Bollywood filmmakers who hail from the state of Punjab. In order for this film to release without any hurdles, it must be modified as per the current guidelines set by the Central Board Of Film Certification (CBFC), which consists of a rigorous process of censorship, which includes being reviewed by up to 9 different committees. These committees often consist of a specific board member who may have a particular agenda and basis which they follow when it comes down to certifying a film. As seen in Kamal Haasan's Uttama Villain, where almost 40 cuts were ordered by CBFC before it was released worldwide after going through an appeal process. K.D. Satyam, a member of CBFC who seemed to have played a negative role in the certification process of Udta Punjab left the board on 30 May 2016. In a tweet, he claimed to have left the board, so that "freedom should prevail." K.D. Satyam also declared his support for freedom of expression and declared himself as an avid fan of Anurag Kashyap's movies. Some members of CBFC then went public that a 'scared' Sharmila Tagore had pressured them into requesting that she be excused from the Udta Punjab certification process. One CBFC member then went on record as saying that the whole issue was a "family matter" and that Sharmila Tagore had been let off due to K.D. Satyam's departure from the board. When asked about the statement, she said, "I have been asked if I know about it and I do not know about it. But no one can ask me about family matters." Sharmila Tagore had worked to ensure the release of Udta Punjab prior to her departure from CBFC citing reasons such as: "A film which captures what we felt we were losing in Punjab is well-timed and necessary because the country needs such an emotional awakening.
